| Do You Know Your Body Mass Index (BMI)? |
| By: Lynda Brooks |
Knowing your body mass index is an excellent way to begin understanding and assisting your body toward better health. This index (BMI) was designed to utilize a ratio of weight to height to determine health risks. BMI’s that are above a certain number on the scale indicate probability of increased health risks.
A BMI over 24.9 signifies that a person is overweight, while a BMI over 30 indicates obesity. Research shows that being overweight has associated health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
The higher the BMI, the greater the risk of health concerns.
A person in the normal weight range has a BMI of 19-24. Recent medical findings indicate that a low BMI (<19) carries increased health risk, too. Interestingly enough, there is a concern strong enough that consideration is being given to requiring runway models to have a BMI of at least 17 (which is still too low) in order to be allowed to model.
BMI scale <19 underweight 20-24.9 normal 25-29.9 overweight >30 obese
